Alexis Porfiriadis

Alexis Porfiriadis received his PhD in Composition at Bath Spa University/UK (2016, supervised by James Saunders) and his master’s degree (2002) and postgraduate diploma (2003) in Composition at the University for Music and Performing Arts Graz/Austria (supervised by Beat Furrer, Gerd Kühr). He has also worked with a number of important European composers like Mathias Spahlinger, Enno Poppe, Bernhard Lang, George Aperghis, Manos Tsangaris, Erich Urbanner, York Hoeller and others. Since 2008 he use mainly verbal, graphic or combinations of verbal/graphic and conventional notation for his scores. His compositions have often the aim to cultivate the collaboration between the members of a group and promote collectivity as well as inviting amateur musicians and non-musicians to make progressive music collectively.
Selected prizes and awards including Music Promotion Prize of Graz, the annual Austrian State grand for Composition, the Scholarship for special academic achievements of the Austrian Ministry of Science and Culture, the Carl Michael Ziehrer Trust Scholarship, the Third Prize at the Second International competition for Composition for String Quartet by Molinari Quartet. His compositions have been presented in festivals and concerts in Europe, USA and Canada.
Alexis is an active teacher for music theory/music history, improvisation and composition in academic and non-academic contexts. He has presented papers on improvisation and composition with verbal and graphic notation in conferences and symposiums in Greece, UK and Cyprus. In 2007 he co-founded the 6daEXIt Improvisation Ensemble which is been considered the longest-living improvisation group in Greece, the WHI ensemble Athens and the art group Music Is Network.
